Yougu Technology’s Self‑Developed 15 MW Semi‑Direct‑Drive Permanent‑Magnet Generator Debuts at the 2025 Beijing International Wind Energy Exhibition

This core piece of equipment, embodying years of Yougu’s R&D efforts, delivers three‑fold breakthroughs in product design, intelligent manufacturing capability and integrated supply‑chain management. It redefines performance benchmarks for large‑capacity offshore wind generators and provides higher‑value renewable‑energy solutions for global wind‑turbine OEMs.

To address the challenges posed by harsh deep‑sea operating conditions, Yougu Electric’s 15 MW semi‑direct‑drive permanent‑magnet generator boasts remarkable advantages in structural design, cooling system and monitoring configuration. Compared with conventional direct‑drive units, it adopts an innovative lightweight housing with octagonal column layout, featuring compact size, light weight, high structural strength, superior efficiency and enhanced reliability.

The generator raises the ingress‑protection rating from the traditional IP33 for semi‑direct‑drive generators to IP65, effectively blocking high‑salinity mist and moisture from penetrating the motor and fundamentally reducing failures caused by environmental corrosion. In addition, by rationally matching the transmission ratio between gearbox and permanent‑magnet generator, it retains the merits of high power density and low losses of permanent‑magnet motors, while greatly cutting the overall volume and weight of the generator. This alleviates nacelle load and withstands structural stress induced by strong winds and waves. Meanwhile, a temporary locking function between stator and rotor facilitates offshore transportation, installation and disassembly of the complete generator unit. The rotor adapter‑hub structure streamlines maintenance procedures for the high‑speed shaft of the gearbox and lowers operation‑and‑maintenance difficulties in deep‑sea scenarios.

Its cooling system adopts an “air‑to‑water‑to‑air” design well‑suited to high‑humidity deep‑sea environments. Four air‑water coolers are evenly arranged circumferentially at the corners of the octagonal stator frame to improve circumferential temperature uniformity inside the motor. A dual‑cycle air‑path structure is formed within each individual air‑water cooler and one‑quarter section of the generator, further optimizing axial temperature uniformity. It lowers the actual operating temperature of rotor magnetic poles under rated working conditions, contributing to improved generator performance and service life.

For monitoring, twelve winding PT100 temperature sensors together with built‑in PT100 sensors enable real‑time temperature tracking of generator windings and other key internal components. Furthermore, it features fault‑monitoring for cooling fans to promptly detect fan abnormalities, guarantee normal cooling‑system operation and provide solid safeguards for stable generator performance.

Equipped with world‑class manufacturing capacity, top‑tier R&D talent, digital‑intelligent construction and a sound quality‑management system, Yougu Electric has built core intelligent‑manufacturing competence for large‑power offshore wind‑power equipment. Focusing on the industrial‑scale project for large‑power offshore wind generators and cooling systems, the company is constructing a large‑scale, high‑precision wind‑power‑equipment manufacturing base through high‑investment phased development. The total designed production capacity reaches 30 GW, capable of turning out 3 000 sets of wind generators of 5 MW and above plus integrated cooling‑system equipment annually upon full completion.

Phase I of the plant has already been completed, delivering an annual capacity of 2 000 sets after commissioning. Phase II will occupy an additional 30 mu of land southeast of Phase I with 40 000 m² of building area to add another 1 000‑set production capacity for phased release. The Phase‑I workshop covers a building area of 31 500 m² with a 20‑meter ceiling height and seven spans, including constant‑temperature workshops. Overhead cranes ranging from 25 T to 200 T cover lifting requirements to satisfy production of large‑scale equipment.

Workshops are precisely divided according to working procedures, covering the full workflow including coil production, coil inserting, pre‑assembly and final assembly. Supported by world‑class professional equipment, high‑precision and high‑efficiency manufacturing processes run from core‑component machining through complete‑machine assembly and testing, ensuring outstanding quality for the 15 MW semi‑direct‑drive permanent‑magnet generator in particular.

Drawing on the parent company’s R&D platform, Yougu Electric has assembled a high‑caliber industry R&D team led by Academician Wang Yaonan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor Huang Shoudao, Doctoral Supervisor from the College of Electrical and Information Engineering, Hunan University, gathering around 30 core members including experts and professors. Four subgroups operate under the R&D Department: Motor R&D, Motor Assembly Process, Cooler Unit, and Drawing & ERP Management. They are respectively responsible for R&D and design of wind generators and cooling systems, assembly processes, engineering drawing and digital‑intelligent management, delivering comprehensive technical backing for the commercialization of products such as the 15 MW semi‑direct‑drive permanent‑magnet generator.

Leveraging the fully‑built Jiangsu Provincial Advanced‑Level Smart Factory of parent company Yougu Technology, Yougu Electric deploys information‑based systems including Manufacturing Execution System, Product Lifecycle Management, Enterprise Resource Planning and Supply‑Chain Management. These enable IT‑driven management across the whole production workflow, support precise control and optimization of manufacturing procedures, raise intelligence levels, streamline workflows and advance industrial‑structure upgrading.
